Welcome to May! This year seems to be flying by so far and is showing no sign of letting up. We begin this week with a Paolo Scotti 10" on DejaVu that I am loving at the moment. Then it's into some afro funky business before working it out with some soulful grooves. Definitely feeling those sunshine vibes in anticipation of the upcoming weekend in Spain!

Be well and enjoy yourself until the next one!
Chris Galvan really took the lead with this one and set the perfect pace with a deep and rootsy, classic vibe. I wanted to maintain the flow while featuring some modern dancefloor standbys from my record bag. After heating up the beats a bit, I couldn't help but turn back the clock a touch.

It's classic sounds turned upside down as we take flight with the Schema Sextet. Catch the vibe then check the date on this burner. Andy Bey speaks cosmic truth with vintage vibes before Soil & Pimp lets the lion off the leash. Next up is a double shot of a label that I am loving as of late, Record Kicks, who are dropping vinyl that will melt the decks. It's the Milano Jazz Dance Combo with a tune that reminds me of a long lost Schema treasure voiced by the undeniable Colonel Red, sounding heavenly and reminding us all to reach just that high. Ray Harris and the Fusion Experiment hails from Glascow and they turn out some serious sounds!

I felt that the timeless 'Compared To What' had to be pulled out as a tip of the hat to a pair of our drinking companions from Saturday night. Some people just get it, while some people never will; we've gotta love them all because there's no denying that people make the world go 'round!

I've just recently come across this tune from the Harris Simon Group. I've been digging it and wanted to share. The circle completes with a trio of giants in Jaco Pastorius, Jon Lucien, and Michael White.

Inspiration information all around!!
Cheers friends, welcome back. Another afro odyssey this week as we venture through some broken beats, a re-edit of a classic, cutups, afro house action, and a touch of latin flavor in the mix before we return full circle with a couple raw afro vibes.

Dele Sosimi spent 7 years playing keys with Fela Kuti and the Egypt 80 band before striking out with Femi Kuti as a founding member of the Positive Force. You may recognize this favorite from Dele's solo career that gets a nice rework here. Gilles Peterson's Havana Cultura project tackles another classic with their latin tinged take on Fela's Roforofo Fight. Masters At Work flip the great Willie Bob, Dackin Dackino provides another taste from the Afro Rock Vol 1 comp newly released on Strut Records, and and early cut from Segun Bucknor taken from the Black Man's Cry comp out now on Now and Again Records that takes a look at the long shadow cast by Lagos Legend and original Black President Fela Kuti. Enjoy!
Greetings! Welcome to another edition of the SOUL FUNKTION Radio show. This week we start off with a Fela tune that has been brought to the surface on the new Nigeria Afrobeat Special compilation on Soundway. A quick reprsise of last week's Strut Special Selection with Trio Mocoto's Nago from Black Rio and then it's back into more Fela bizniz. We get into a bit of boogie and house flavor before closing out with a Bobbi Humphrey classic. Everything seemed to flow fairly well this week. We'll call it the luck of the Irish. Happy St Patrick's Day!!

Strut Records Special Selection w/ DJ Offbeat & Chris Galvan

Welcome along as we take a listen to a special selection of records from the Strut label. In recording this show, I realized just how much Strut has influenced my afrobeat ears over the years. The recent set of Inspiration Information collaborations have been as exciting to listen to as they were to imagine...Amp Fiddler in the room with Sly & Robbie...Horace Andy singing over Ashley Beedle tracks...Mulatu creating with the Heliocentrics...Jimi Tenor working it out with Tony Allen..top notch! Strut have also released some great re-edit 12"s, groovy disco projects, and a couple absolutely banging Black Rio comps. We could do a lovely Brasil Selection just pulling from these two albums.

But my money is on the blistering Afro Strut sounds this for set. Starting off with an undeniable mantra from Segun Bucknor, blasting off with a Tony Allen classic, and a quick peak at an excellent new album recently released by the Souljazz Orchestra. Then it's a taste of Club Africa, Nigeria 70, and Afro Rock Vol. 1, including the web exclusive Odi-Yoo by the Latapaza Band.

The first time I heard a Lafayette Afro Rock Band album was quite like my first listen to Blue Break Beats compilations; utter amazement at not only the sounds I was hearing, but these albums play like a hip-hop sample source collection. One after another they come!

A few that never seem to leave the bag are Fever by Jingo and this Shina Williams afro disco jam. Absolute personal favorites. Topped off with a tune from Mulatu Steps Ahead, the huge Green Africa, and an Inspiration Information mixup orchestrated by Mr Chris Galvan. Every album and artist featured in this special selection is worthy of more of our time, so dig in and happy listening!
Big respect to everyone making Strut Records such a great part of my life!
February is Carnaval time, which means this past month I've had Brazil on my mind. This episode features 20 of my favorite Brazilian records. The mix focuses on the funkier sounds of Brazil: Jazz Fusion, Rare Groove, and Disco-funk. There are plenty of classics--some well known songs by Azymuth, Marcos Valle, Paula Lima, and some lesser-known records you might not have heard before. As always, all vinyl. Chris Galvan Brasil Selection

I was very excited when DJ Offbeat asked me to do a Brasil mix for Soul Funktion Radio. The music of Brasil covers such a wide range of sounds and genres, it's European and African, it's commercial and traditional. In all cases, you can hear the soul of the Brasileiros through their music. I've tried to cover a wide range of sounds , and time periods. I've started with one of the most haunting vocals to ever be recorded, Astrud Gilberto singing 'Manha de Carnaval' from the 1959 movie, 'Black Orpheus'. Another track, which has personal meaning to me is 'Queixume' by Tom and Joyce. This track was my gateway into further exploration of Brasilian music and still sounds as fresh as it did on the dance floor in 2002. Since that time, my shelves seem to accumulate more Brasilian records on an almost weekly basis. Enjoy the mix and muito obrigado. -- Chris Galvan

Far Out Recordings was started in 1994 by London-born Brazilian record don Joe Davis. Mr Davis had been making trips to Brazil for a number of years, digging for lost gems and supplying DJs such as Gilles Peterson with crate after crate of magic. Through these adventures, it became possible to record new albums from such legends as Azymuth, Marcos Valle, and Joyce, as well as cultivate younger artists such as Sabrina Malheiros. With a steady output of top quality new music, alongside a choice selection of re-issues, Far Out quickly became the most trusted label focusing on Brazilian music. Last year they celebrated 15 years. Here's to the next 15!

DJ Offbeat, Chris Galvan, and OdDio end the decade by taking a look back at some of the Labels and Artists that have influenced us, inspired us, and led us to where we are today.

We examined Compost Records, Jazzanova, Schema Records, 4 Hero, and Especial Records in December. We started the year off right with a look at Scandinavian Jazz and Nicola Conte. This week we focus on Gerardo Frisina.

Gerardo Frisina is a vital piece of the Ishtar equation. His deep knowledge of jazz has been key in the creation and success of Ishtar, which houses most notably the Schema and Rearward labels. He began as a producer for artists involved with Ishtar and quickly moved into production of his own records. This began with the release of Ad Lib in 2001 and has since brought us Hi Note and The Latin Kick. Along the way, he has managed to ring up an impressive catalog of remixes of modern jazz tunes, as well as an incredible selection of classic artists including the likes of Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, and more.

Gerardo continues to DJ worldwide, always moving forward with his fusion of modern sounds, brazilian, and latin jazz. You can dig deeper at www.Ishtar.com and www.myspace.com/gerardofrisina

We started the year off right with a look at Scandinavian Jazz. This week, we turn our attention to Italian jazz maestro Nicola Conte.

The swinging jazz sounds of Nicola Conte first entered my world in the form of the Schema Records album 'Jet Sounds'. A modern take on bossa, the groove based tunes flowed one after another until the final notes of 'Trappola Mortale' faded into silence. I ached for more and immediately began the journey again. The audience widened a bit in America with the Eighteenth Street Lounge re-release, renamed 'Bossa Per Due' and a full remix album aptly titled 'Jet Sounds Revisited'.

The remixes flowed, as did my love of these dancefloor jazz sounds. Taking a more pure jazz tone, Nicola Conte and his band recorded 'Other Directions' in 2004 for Blue Note. Conte returned to his home at Schema Records with 2008's 'Rituals'. Late in 2009, Schema released a double album of collected remixes from over the years under the name 'The Modern Sound of Nicola Conte: Versions In Jazz Dub' and the journey continues.

I was fortunate enough to catch a DJ set at Sonotheque in Chicago in late 2003, where I enjoyed the fine selections of Mr Conte, as well as an excellent conversation and more than a few drinks with the man himself. Chris and his lovely wife came for a visit late last year and we all took in the live band, featuring Nicola on guitar and the one Jose James on vocals. Needless to say, they brought the house down.

Fond memories all around! We hope you enjoy a small sampling of the ever growing body of work Nicola Conte has blessed us with thus far and look forward to what the future may bring. Also, be sure to check out the Schema Records Special if you missed it.

Much love, respect, and thanks to Nicola Conte and the good people at Schema Records, as well as all of the talented labels and artists featured in this show.
There's something about this time of year that I always find myself going back to my roots, digging through my records and, without fail, listening to more jazz. It's been a blast to feature some of my favorite records on the Especial Records Special and the Scandinavian Jazz Special the past two weeks, alongside Chris Galvan and OdDio. I've also really been enjoying a few new albums. Among those, a few have stood out and found themselves in regular rotation around the house.

I've been a big fan of Phil Ranelin since I became aware of him when the Vibes From The Tribe album was re-issued in 2001. So I am really grateful to not only have his classic albums see re-issue, but also see Phil creating anew. The Tribe records crew's new album, Tribe Revisited, that Carl Craig instigated is excellent and could easily sit alongside the original material released on Tribe Records back in the day. I also have a sweet spot in my heart as these guys made it happen in Detroit.

Phil Ranelin and Pharoah Sanders are among the stellar artists comprising the Build An Ark collective, headed up by Carlos Nino and growing out of Los Angeles. Their new album, Love Part 1, has some moments that are stop you dead in your tracks, overwhelming emotionally, even many listens in. Absolutely stunning. Music at it's best.

I've also really been enjoying the companion double album to Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker's Freedom Rhythm & Sound book. Twenty three show stoppers from the 60s and 70s that focus on the independent spirit of the underground and a scene that grew side by side with the civil rights movement. Powerful conscience sounds to keep you moving in the right direction.

I've also pulled out a mixtape that I made on my first day after moving to Brooklyn a couple years ago. It's nothing to speak of from a DJ perspective, but it fits nicely with what I've been feeling and jamming out lately, including some vintage Phil Ranelin, a Joe McPhee burner, and probably my favorite cut from the unbelievable Dave Pike. Maybe this can help generate some heat during what looks to be a cold winter ahead. I hope you enjoy!

Yeah, Right On! mixed by DJ Offbeat
1. Milt Jackson - People Make The World Go Round - CTI
2. Eddie Henderson - Inside You - Blue Note
3. Phil Ranelin - Vibes From The Tribe - Time Is Now
4. Earth, Wind & Fire - Bad Tune - Warner
5. Joe McPhee - Shakey Jake - CjRecord Productions
6. The New Process - Freedom - Tramp
7. Charles Brackermeen Quartet - Attainment - Silkheart
8. Dave Pike - Swan Lake - Muse
FutureHistoryOfHouse, Music Is Everything, and oddiofile present the Scandinavian Jazz Special

We start the year off right with a jazzy dancefloor affair focusing on modern Scandinavian Jazz.

The Scandinavian countries have a long and strong jazz tradition, but like most of the music you'll hear on this site I came to know of it late, and by way of house music. I think the first points of contact, for me, were the Nuspirit Helsinki releases that came out on Guidance in the late 90s and early 00s. At that time I wasn't at all clear on what Nu-jazz was, or Broken Beat, or Jazzdance--but I liked what I was hearing, and felt increasingly drawn to less formulaic dance music. There seemed to be an interesting cross-polination happening between Italy, Japan, Germany, and Finland--and the Nuspirit name showed up elsewhere, cropping up on labels like JCR, remixing artists like Nicola Conte, and making all around wonderful music.

The early to mid 00s were an interesting time for dance music, with many producers putting aside their old aesthetics and trying for more organic sounds through live instrumentation. Nuspirit Helsinki shuffled their lineup and started releasing records under the name the Five Corners Quintet. This was not sample-based nujazz, but live jazz with true jazz sensibility and musicianship. In 2003 they released their landmark first 10" Trading Eights on the newly-formed Ricky-Tick Records--but they were not alone. Other groups from surrounding countries, such as Koop (Sweden) and Povo (Denmark), were involved in a similar project to revamp sixties style jazz for the dancefloor. With one foot firmly planted in the bop, cool jazz, and spiritual jazz tradition and the other taking a big step into the future, this music brought steady acclaim through the rest of the decade--from DJs, music critics, and open-minded dancefloors alike.

Given the impact of the work of the Ricky-Tick artists Timo Lassy, Five Corners Quintet, Dalindeo, Jukka Eskola we were eager to make them the subject of one of our decade-ending retrospectives, but as they represent just a part of the jazz movement happening up north, we were happy to welcome artists on DNM (Oddjob, Soular Sound), Raw Fusion (A Bossa Eletrica, Povo), and JCR (Koop) into our geographically-defined "Scandinavian Jazz Special."

Much love, respect, and thanks are due to the people at Ricky-Tick and the other labels and artists featured in this show.

DJ Offbeat and Chris Galvan end the decade by taking a look back at some of the Labels and Artists that have influenced us, inspired us, and led us to where we are today.

We've taken a look at Compost Records, Jazzanova, and Schema Records so far. This week we focus on Dollis Hill's 4 Hero.

Marc Mac and Dego started making waves in 1989 and haven't stopped since. Beginning in the Drum & Bass world, the pair created the Reinforced label and quickly became a major force in the underground. With tracks like Mr Kirk (Mr Kirk's Nightmare) in 1990, they pulled more attention than anyone previous to the Drum & Bass scene. Keep in mind that this was a full 4 years before we would see Goldie's 'Inner City Life' and a couple more years before the likes of Roni Size and Grooverider would break the 'new jazz' sound into the mainstream's conscious.

By this time, 4 Hero had already released 'Parallel Universe' and were preparing to unleash the album 'Two Pages' on Talkin' Loud Records. This double album would combine the organic, jazz-improvised, live sound with a dark, electronic side to present a fully realized journey through two competing, yet complimentary, perspectives. Not only did this album find 4 Hero at their most orchestrated and soulful pinnacle to date, it also earned the duo a Mercury Prize nomination and a whole new audience. Many would argue that 'Two Pages' layed the groundwork for the entire Brokenbeat scene that would soon take West London by frenzy, much as Drum & Bass had just a few years prior.

2001's 'Creating Patterns' expanded on the lush, complex arrangements, including a massive recreation of Minnie Ripperton's 'Les Fleur'. 4 Hero created a new label, Raw Canvas, to release 'Play With The Changes' in 2006. This allowed them the opportunity to control the way in which the album was produced and presented from start to finish. Collaborations with the legendary Larry Mizell (Mizell Brothers) seemed effortless and a take on Stevie Wonder's 'Superwoman' showed their innate ability to be true to a classic while still pushing forward.

Perhaps this is the precise quality that speaks to so many through 4 Hero's music. Whether it be through drum & bass, nujazz, brokenbeat, techno, hip hop, and beyond, 4 Hero has pioneered an amazingly diverse selection of sounds and birthed multiple genres in the process. An adoration of the soul, funk, and jazz classics pushed to new heights through dizzying creativity and an unwavering ability to constantly remain at the forefront of both the modern dancefloor and headphone soul.

4 Hero Special - DJ Offbeat & Chris Galvan
1. John Coltrane - Naima (4 Hero Version)
2. 4 Hero - Golden Age Of Life
3. Nuyorican Soul - I Am the Black Gold Of The Sun (4 Hero Remix edit)
4. 4 Hero - Something In The Way ft Bembe Segue & Kaidi Tatham
5. 4 Hero - Look Inside ft Face
6. 4 Hero - Third Stream
7. 4 Hero - Morning Child
8. 4 Hero - Won't You Open Up Your Senses
9. 4 Hero - 9X9
10. Ralfi Pagan - Didn't Want To Have To Do It (4 Hero Remix)
11. 4 Hero & Patricia Marx - Submerso
12. Azymuth - Vera Cruz (4 Hero Remix)
13. Grupo Batuque - E Ruim (4 Hero Remix)
14. Allen Hoist - Inner City Blues (4 Hero Remix)
15. Reel People - Outta Love (4 Hero Remix)
16. 4 Hero presents Nature's Plan - Broken Samba
17. Innerzone Orchestra - Bug In The Bassbin (4 Hero Mix)
DJ Offbeat, Chris Galvan, and OdDio end the decade by taking a look back at some of the Labels and Artists that have influenced us, inspired us, and led us to where we are today.

We've taken a look at Compost Records and Jazzanova so far. This week we turn our attention to Schema Records. A partnership between Luciano Cantone and Davide Rosa first spawned Edizioni Ishtar in the early 90s and was quickly followed by Family Affair Distribution. Today Family Affair distributes labels like Compost, Soul Jazz, and F-Communications throughout Italy, while it also distributes Ishtar Productions (Schema, Big Sur, Rearward) worldwide.

Schema was birthed when Nicola Conte and Gerardo Frisina were brought on board and what followed has been an amazing string of beautiful jazz-based records from the heart of Italy to dancefloors worldwide. While we will focus specifically on the work of Nicola Conte and Gerardo Frisina in their own specials over the coming weeks, their presence can be felt in virtually every Schema release. Undeniably groovy, Schema presents top quality jazz for the mind, body, and soul.

Respect to the entire Schema family that continues to release amazing records by world class artists and to all of you for supporting the future sounds!
DJ Offbeat & Chris Galvan end the decade by taking a look back at some of the Labels and Artists that have influenced us, inspired us, and led us to where we are today. We start with Compost, a label that has been the starting point for so many artists, sounds, and styles over the years and has released an amazingly robust catalog of soulful, jazzy, funky beat-driven music. This music is close to our hearts and remains at the forefront of deep and soulful dancefloors worldwide.
This weekend, we received some disappointing news. Domu (aka Umod, Bakura, Rima, Yokoto, Sonar Circle, Zoltar, etc) has called it a day. Domu has delivered us so many incredible records over the past 10 years that it is absolutely staggering to think about. He has always been at the forefront, pushing the beats and sounds to the edge and beyond.

An impromptu tribute session Sunday morning yielded this mix of 11 of my personal favorites.
Domu, you inspired us and have blessed us with so much happiness through music. We are deeply grateful. Massive respect. Stand tall!

Peace fam, I hope all is well in your world!
DJ Offbeat lays down some heat both new and old in the first hour before handing it over to our friend DJC from the 4Deep crew in Atlanta.
The first time I played the Connect party, it was DJC and his lovely lady who picked me up from the airport and got me sorted. We spent a great afternoon at Mike Z's loft playing some records before the party that night. When I returned a few months later, DJ had just returned from Japan and was slowly killing us with his stories of Yellow and the records to be had, thus confirming what we already knew...Japan was a must for our travels in the near future. The last time I was in town, he played just before me and went DEEEP! DJC is a good friend of the SOUL FUNKTION camp and I'm not certain just why this is his first appearance on the radio show and podcast ?? Holler at him and show him some love. Maybe we can make his second appearance more timely!
Warm greetings!
DJ Offbeat returns to the decks this week along with very special guest Kemit! I met Kemit a few years back when we were both in Denver playing the AfroBlu party. Much love to Peju, Ashara, RJ, Sean and the entire AfroBlu fam. Kemit has been one of my absolute favorite DJs since that night and he's hands down one of the best people in this community.
It's been a long time coming to have him on the show and we couldn't be happier!! If you're in ATL make sure you check out the Spread Love party Friday July 24th (and once every month)
